Oral Cancer Screening Chicago, IL

Oral Cancer Screening Chicago, IL, offered by Medhat Dental ExcellenceDental exams are a critical part of maintaining your oral health. They allow us to check your mouth for signs of decay, damage, redness, swelling, and more. By detecting issues in their earliest stages, we can take action and recommend the best treatments to restore your mouth before the problem grows worse. At Medhat Dental Excellence, we look for more than tooth decay and gum disease. We also perform an oral cancer screening.

Oral Cancer

Oral cancer, or cancer of the mouth, can strike anywhere in your oral cavity, including your lips, gums, cheeks, the floor of the mouth, palate, or far back near the entrance of your throat. It affects over 40,000 Americans every year. If not diagnosed and treated early, oral cancer can be fatal. If cancer has begun to spread to the lymph nodes, the likelihood of survival after five years is approximately 60%. If it has spread to other areas of the body, survival after five years drops to about 38%. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to surviving.

Symptoms of Oral Cancer

At your regular dental exams, your mouth is scanned for signs and symptoms of oral cancer. However, these symptoms will not wait until your six-month appointment to appear. There are several signs that you should be on the lookout for, and contact the office as soon as you notice them:
•  Changes in your oral tissues. The soft tissues of your mouth are normally smooth, and pink, any changes –
•  unusual growths, red or white patches, or sores that just will not heal should be addressed as soon as possible.
•  Trouble chewing, talking or swallowing.
•  Changes in your bite, or in the way that your dentures fit.
•  A numb sensation in your jaw and chin.

Risk Factors

There are certain factors that can increase your risk of developing oral cancer:
•  Lifestyle habits. Approximately 90% of all oral cancer patients were smokers or used some other type of tobacco product. 70% to 80% of oral cancer patients drank heavily. If you smoke and drink excessively, your risk increases exponentially.
•  Family history. If a family member was diagnosed with oral cancer, your risk is increased.
•  Your age. The older you are, the more likely you are to develop oral cancer.
•  Certain strains of HPV (human papilloma virus).

How is Oral Cancer Diagnosed?

The first step in diagnosing oral cancer is with a thorough oral exam. We check your mouth for any abnormalities and check your face and neck for swelling. If we find anything, we will then move on to a more thorough investigation. This often involves the use of X-rays and a soft tissue biopsy.

A biopsy is one of our best tools for diagnosing or ruling out oral cancer. It involves the removal of a section of the abnormality in your mouth for closer examination. There are a few different types of soft tissue biopsy, including:
•  Incisional, or diagnostic. This type of biopsy is often done on larger abnormalities.
•  Excisional. This biopsy is done on small lesions. It can also be used to remove the entire abnormality.
•  Punch biopsy. With this type of biopsy, a special tool is used to remove several layers of tissue.
•  Brush biopsy. Instead of removing a section of tissue, a brush tool is used to remove cells for examination.

If you notice any changes in your oral tissues, don’t wait until your next scheduled appointment to address them. Contact Medhat Dental Excellence today at (773) 774-4611 North Milwaukee Ave Location
