Periodontal Disease
Periodontal disease, more commonly known as gum disease, is broken down into two stages: gingivitis and periodontitis.
Gingivitis can be characterized by swollen and bleeding gums. Periodontal disease begins with the bacteria found in dental plaque, a sticky substance that is constantly forming on your teeth. To get rid of the bacteria, your immune system releases toxic substances that can inflame and damage the gums, bone, and ligaments. Gingivitis is easily treated and can often be reversed. During a routine checkup, Dr. Ramin A. Medhat will look for signs of periodontal disease. Our dental hygienist will also perform a professional cleaning to help keep plaque and tartar (calcified plaque) under control. If Dr. Ramin A. Medhat notices any signs of gingivitis, he will instruct you to improve your oral hygiene practices.
If left untreated, your gingivitis may progress into periodontitis. As the infection spreads, periodontitis can cause significant damage to the surrounding bone and ligaments that keep your teeth in place. You may experience pain, loose teeth, or even tooth loss. If you have periodontitis, large pockets will begin to form between your teeth and gums, trapping, even more, bacteria and plaque. To remove these pockets and stop the disease, we may perform a root and scaling procedure. During this procedure, we will remove plaque and tartar from the root and surface of the tooth. If successful, your gum tissue should reattach to the tooth, and encourage better periodontal health. If not, we may need to discuss surgical options.
Risks Factors of Periodontal Disease
We know that bacteria in plaque are the main culprits of periodontal disease. However, there are several risk factors that can also contribute.
• |
Tobacco use. Patients who smoke or use tobacco products are at a much greater risk of developing periodontal disease. If you already have the disease, smoking can render treatment ineffective, and even increase the rate of infection.
|
• |
Genetics. Unfortunately, some patients are more likely to get periodontal disease because of their genes. Even if you are prone to the disease, you can still prevent or control it with good oral hygiene.
|
• |
Stress and Hormones. Studies have linked stress and fluctuating hormones to periodontal disease. Stress can weaken your immune system, and make it harder for your body to fight off the infection. Changes in hormone levels during pregnancy and puberty can also temporarily increase your risk of developing periodontal disease.
|
• |
Misaligned or crowded teeth. When your teeth are misaligned or crowded, it can make it more difficult to brush and floss, enhancing plaque and tartar formation. Dr. Ramin A. Medhat may suggest orthodontic treatment, or show you the proper way to clean these difficult areas.
|
• |
Other diseases. Patients with diabetes and diseases that affect your immune system are much more likely to develop periodontal disease. Having these diseases can make it more difficult to control periodontitis, but Dr. Ramin A. Medhat can give you proper guidance.
|
• |
Certain medications. Medications that reduce the flow of saliva have also been linked to periodontal disease. Saliva is an integral part of keeping plaque at bay. |
