TMJ Chicago, IL

We can relieve discomfort and diagnose problems, helping you create a treatment plan for jaw misalignment known as TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) dysfunction. Some signs and symptoms of this disorder are obvious, and some are less obvious. If you are experiencing jaw pain, facial pain, or any unusual facial discomfort, our team at Medhat Dental Excellence and Artistic Smiles Family Dental Care has experience diagnosing and treating issues that affect the alignment of your jaw and temporomandibular joint (TMJ).

Dr. Medhat can meet with you, perform a full examination of your jaw, your bite, and evaluate your alignment. We will examine your TMJ for any irregularities while conducting a comprehensive exam. For some patients, this process may take multiple examinations to observe changes. Together, we will seek to detect signs that may indicate temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) or other possibilities to relieve your discomfort.

What is the Temporomandibular Joint?

A long and complicated sounding name, the TMJ is the joint in your jaw that allows for movement. This joint moves both up and down and side to side, allowing you to chew foods, speak and breathe. When a patient has a proper bite, this joint can harmoniously function. If the patient has a bad bite or has had a traumatic injury, this joint can be out of alignment and then does not perform properly. The symptoms can range from small and barely noticeable to severe and highly uncomfortable or even painful. The condition can range, and so can the symptoms and how the symptoms are perceived.

Having normal TMJ function is essential for proper use. When the joint is misaligned, the patient can experience symptoms that they may not even recognize as being related. Some common symptoms that patients may have included:

•  Not being able to fully open or close your jaw.
•  Experiencing a popping or clicking sensation in your jaw.
•  Experiencing pain or a tired feeling in your jaw.
•  Feeling facial pain, such as earaches, eyebrow pain, or cheekbone pain.
•  Suffering from migraines or headaches.

How is TMJ Dysfunction Treated?

TMJ dysfunction treatment begins with a consultation and examination with Dr. Medhat. Your treatment plan will be customized to your specific needs. Some of the more common treatment methods include:

•  Creating a customized mouthguard that is designed to track your jaw movement while you sleep. Using a specialized machine, the mouthguard can then work to realign your jaw over time.
•  Discuss orthodontic work to improve your bite. For patients who have a poor bite, an orthodontic device such as a clear aligner or braces may be necessary.
•  Decide if tooth restoration is needed. A common problem with the loss of a tooth is the uncontrolled movement of neighboring teeth, causing havoc to your bite. By restoring a tooth, we can stop the shifting of neighboring teeth.
•  For some patients, it may be necessary to discuss a full mouth restoration. The procedures needed will be customized specifically to you.

Dr. Medhat has extensive experience in helping to reduce and eliminate the discomfort or pain that comes from TMJ dysfunction. We would love to meet with you and help you perfect your smile. We will work closely with you to determine the treatment plan that is most ideally suited to your individual needs. Treatment begins with contacting our front office to schedule an appointment.
