Periodontal Health Chicago, IL
We use the term “periodontal” to describe the gum tissue, ligaments, and bone that surrounds your teeth. Your periodontal health is a crucial component of your overall oral health. Bacteria and infection can lead to decay, disease, and even tooth loss. At Medhat Dental Excellence and Artistic Smiles Family Dental Care, our goal is to keep your periodontal health pristine through professional cleanings, preventative measures, and patient education. Dr. Medhat and our staff work with you to ensure you maintain a beautiful and healthy smile!
Periodontal disease, more commonly known as gum disease, is broken down into two stages: gingivitis and periodontitis.
Gingivitis can be characterized by swollen and bleeding gums. Periodontal disease begins with the bacteria found in dental plaque, a sticky substance that is constantly forming on your teeth. To get rid of the bacteria, your immune system releases toxic substances that can inflame and damage the gums, bone, and ligaments. Gingivitis is easily treated and can often be reversed. During a routine checkup, Dr. Medhat will look for signs of periodontal disease. Our dental hygienist will also perform a professional cleaning to help keep plaque and tartar (calcified plaque) under control. If Dr. Medhat notices any signs of gingivitis, he will instruct you to improve your oral hygiene practices.
If left untreated, your gingivitis may progress into periodontitis. As the infection spreads, periodontitis can cause significant damage to the surrounding bone and ligaments that keep your teeth in place. You may experience pain, loose teeth, or even tooth loss. If you have periodontitis, large pockets will begin to form between your teeth and gums, trapping, even more, bacteria and plaque. To remove these pockets and stop the disease, we may perform a root and scaling procedure. During this procedure, we will remove plaque and tartar from the root and surface of the tooth. If successful, your gum tissue should reattach to the tooth, and encourage better periodontal health. If not, we may need to discuss surgical options.
Risks Factors of Periodontal Disease
We know that bacteria in plaque are the main culprits of periodontal disease. However, there are several risk factors that can also contribute.
