Dental Crown Chicago, IL
A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is placed over a damaged tooth. They serve as a crucial restoration device that can extend a tooth’s lifespan and save it from extraction. At Medhat Dental Excellence and Artistic Smiles Family Dental Care, we use dental crowns to help repair the strength, shape, and structure of your natural tooth. There are several types of dental crowns, each with unique advantages, which serve some different functions.
Process of Dental Crowns
The process of receiving a dental crown is usually broken down into two appointments.
During your first visit, Dr. Medhat will reshape and resize your tooth to accommodate the crown. An impression will be made and sent to the dental laboratory, where they will fabricate your new crown. This may take a couple of weeks, and you make be given a temporary crown to protect the tooth. During this time, make sure to adjust your diet and avoid hard-to-eat foods.
Once the crown is ready, we can schedule your second appointment. Your temporary crown will be removed, and we will check to make sure the permanent crown is properly secure. If everything is correct, we will bond the crown to the tooth using a special cement.
Types of Dental Crowns
There are several types of dental crowns.
Porcelain is quickly becoming the most popular type of dental crown. Porcelain is a versatile material that can be molded to look and function like your natural teeth. Porcelain offers the very best in aesthetics, but it does not provide the strength and longevity of other materials. In some cases, the porcelain can be fused to a metal structure to provide a stronger bond and increase durability.
For patients that need a stronger restoration, metal crowns may be the best option. Gold crowns are nearly impossible to fracture and undergo no wear. They require a little reshaping of your tooth and are “gentle” on your adjacent teeth. However, they do not provide the best aesthetics. For this reason, gold crowns are primarily used for your posterior teeth, specifically your molars. The same applies to crowns made from base metal alloys.
Uses of Dental Crowns
A dental crown can be used in some situations. Some of which include:
Caring for a Dental Crown
Like most restorations, dental crowns will eventually need to be repaired or replaced. The average dental crown lasts between five and 15 years. A proper oral hygiene regimen and regular dental visits can drastically increase their lifespan. Make sure to brush and floss daily and avoid bad habits like biting your nails or opening packages with your teeth.
