Dental Bonding Chicago, IL![]() What is the Dental Bonding ProcessBefore we can start the dental bonding process, we will determine if you are a suitable candidate. Dr. Medhat will perform an oral exam, review your dental records, and go over the facts you need to make an informed decision. The procedure itself is fairly simple. Dr. Medhat will select a shade of composite resin material that matches the color of your existing teeth. We then prepare your tooth by delicately etching the surface and applying a conditioning liquid. This creates a rough exterior and increases the strength of the bond. Once your tooth is ready, we can apply the bonding material. Resin composite has the texture and consistency of a putty-like substance. This allows us to properly shape and mold it until we match the appearance of your natural teeth. Once Dr. Medhat is satisfied with the results, we use an ultraviolet curing light to bond the material in place. You may be asked to bite down several times so we can remove any excess resin, and ensure a flush surface. A finishing polish is applied to prevent any irritation, and improve esthetics. Some patients may experience a strange sensation or sensitivity after bonding. Your tooth may feel wider or unnaturally bulky. Over time, this sensation will diminish, and you will get used to the new shape of your tooth. Good Candidates for Dental BondingDental bonding is typically used for your front teeth because composite resin works best in areas of low bite pressure. Dental crowns and veneers may be more appropriate for patients that have extensive tooth damage or molar complications. For patients with diastemas, dental bonding can be an ideal procedure to close the gap. Diastemas caused by misaligned or crooked teeth may require orthodontic treatment instead. Resin composite is a porous material that tends to stain easily. If you are concerned about stains, we may recommend porcelain veneers, which are much more stain resistant. Aftercare for Dental BondingUnder proper care and maintenance, dental bonding can last up to a decade or more. This depends on the bite area and how you treat your restored tooth. To increase the lifespan of your restoration, avoid habits that can damage the bonding material. Patients who bite their fingernails chew on pen caps, and open packages with their mouth may need to repair the bonding sooner than usual. Also, resin composite does not respond to whitening treatment. The best way to maintain a bright and beautiful smile is through proper oral hygiene.
